Here's another one. These are fun to do. but I'm writing the text after the images. and I'm drawing them with no story in mind. Just using the text to glue the panels together. which is interesting, makes the whole process spontaneous which is enjoyable. The next one I do might be a gmail chat one (like I mentioned in the last post). I might have to get the ok with the people I've been chatting to online before I do it though hahaha.

I Really, really wanna do a comic. But I keep putting it off because I've not done any sequential work. Even when I think of a little idea for some small sequential pieces as practise for something bigger, I become put off because I feel like I'm gonna mess that idea up because i've not done sentential work before. And there I stay in that ridiculous paradox.

So now I'm just gonna start drawing and write as I go along.
I also though I might use some of my Gmail chats as a kind dialogue for small comic pieces. That way I can't get bogged down in the idea, or the writing and just concentrate on the panels.

I'm gonna try and do more of these.

I saw yesterday that Titan books have Re-issued Andrew Loomis book 'Figure Drawing For All It’s Worth'. This is one of the best books on figure drawing ever. It's been out of print for 50 years or something. Pdf copies have been circulating around the net for a few years now and i think there been all sorts of online petitions trying to get this book reprinted, and thankfully it must have worked!

before if you wanted a copy it would have set you back around £100 if you could find something on amazon with a copy, now you can get it for £29!!

Hopefully they'll reprint his others, like 'Heads and hand'

Cartoon brew is one of my favourite animation sites, I feel really proud to have a piece of my work posted on it. Thanks CB!

So finally finished it.

This is based on these two panels from Jamie Hewlett's the Comic 'Tank Girl the Odyssey'

I animated this using Flash and composited in After Effects.

I might make a habit out of animating comic panels that i like. It's a nice way to work in different styles. It's also cool because you can treat the panels as layouts.

I animated this based on a panel from Jamie Hewlett's 'Tank Girl - The Odyssey'

I Just love Hewlett's work, and the 'the Odyssey' my favorite Tank Girl comic. I was searching online to see if anyones done any TG fan animation, and other than the animated sections from the film (which are amazing!) I couldn't find any. So I thought being an animator I'd give it a shot.

I've still gotta add smoke, shadow levels and colour it.
I'll post it when it's done.

I also might animate the next panel and cut them together.

This might look like something that took 10 minutes, but i actually spent about an hour and a half on it maybe more. I'm trying to learn about how to choose colours and draw backgrounds, so I'm gonna keep doing things like this more so i can get a lot better.

Where the wild things are

I went to see where the wild things are the other day, I had high hopes for the film and I've gotta say I was a little disappointed. it was visually stunning but the story was really lacking. I did wonder how they could turn a 10 page book into a a full feature. i think it would have been a good half hour to 40 minutes film, but there definitely wasn't enough story to warrant a full feature.

I found this the other day, It's a where the wild things are test done by John Lasseter while he was still at Disney.

I've been Educating myself this week, i've been watching lectures on colour theory, rendering Geo-forms and watching dvd's and about background art. plus looking at a load of books.

This not a great example of this new found knowledge. It was just a quick muck about before bed. but i started liking where it was going so i finished it up. i was debating weather or not to post it, but i thought F'it, i'll post it. Maybe you guys can give me some tips?

I was talking to a good Friend recently and like most of the conversation I have with this particular individual, the conversation became very deep.

we were talking about the current society, social decline and the general state of unhappiness people are living in. We talked about our personal experiences of this, one in particular I experienced the day before on a bus. the conversation led to us trying to understand why people are acting in such ways, then my friend said something that made me think back to something I read recently. I told him about this book and how brilliant it was.

The book I was talking about is a drawing book by Walt stanchfield called "Drawn to life"

I recommend this book for more than what it can offer your drawing ability, it's all about the philosophy of living and being creative. It sounds strange to say as it's primarily seen as a drawing Manuel, and it is, but it offers something more about drawing than just " this is how you draw a head, and this is how you draw the foot". Walt's like, if you wanna be good at drawing, go play tennis, or go for a run, keep healthy, experience life, go on holiday, for if your not experiencing what life has to offer, how can you re-create it. I urge everyone to go and buy both volumes of this book and read it cover to cover.

Here's a quote from it that i read yesterday, it's exactly a point i was trying to make to my friend a couple of weeks ago about why i thought people are acting the way they are. this quote says it more beautifully and clearly than i did.

I found this really cool little animation freeware program called pencil. It's small and neat and easy really easy to use, plus it works and mac's as well as pc's.

I did this really little rought test with it.

Went life drawing again for the first time in a while and i found it really hard. I need to start going on the reggs. I'll post up SOME of the results of the session and some sketch book stuff in a couple of days.

Here's some expression I did of Chick Chickson. I wanna do a turn around or a model sheet for him but every time I draw him he changes a bit and i quite like that, i don't wanna limit his development so i'm not gonna do one just yet. I think I'll know I've got him the way i want him. I'll do a tie down model sheet then. but i think I'm pretty close to how i expect him to look.

So I bought this water colour set about over a year ago and i did one or two things with it and they sucked so bad that I've not touched them it since. but an amazing artist who I'm lucky enough to call a friend, Kristian Antonelli, has picked up the water colours himself and is doing so very inspiring work, so much so that he's inspired me to dust off my set.

Do Yourself A Favor

These two dudes are a constant inspiration to me and it's about time a gave them a humble salute on my blog.

I love prince because of his constant striving to push his music and never being comfortable with where he's at, it's the reason that no one album sounds like the last. also the musical skill he possesses as a musician is unreal. I've had the pleasure of seeing him perform on a number of occasions and that guy can shred.

He is also a pioneer in the music business as an artist who owns and distributes his own music so that he can have complete control over his art, as opposed to the soulless, engineered, and commercial Enterprise that is the music industry.

This concept of being in full control of what and why you produce work is a massive inspiration to me. It's something I hope to achieve myself in the future.

Next Stevie wonder

Stevie himself was somewhat of a pioneer in that department. He was one of the first artists to successfully negotiate with a record label to have full creative control and the rights to his own songs. this led to more experimental music that dealt with social and political problems. work with meaningful content is so important to me, and although i have never really demonstrated that in my work that you may have seen on this blog, it's something i plan to make the dominant feature in my work as soon as i reach a level in animation, draftsmanship, and film making from which to realise my ideas to a high standard.

and again Stevie's level of musical ability, despite his obvious disability, is just unbelievable. I don't know if you know this but Stevie started off as a drummer, and boy can he drum, my word.

I went to a sound art performance on Friday with my friend who is a sound artist himself.

I have a hard time understand it I must say, but I think it's good to keep an open mind, or at least be open enough to experience it first before saying 'it not for me'....but from the little experience I have of the art form, my current position is "it's not for me"

I was recently asked to be interviewed by a website called wearehq about myself and how I work and stuff. It was a bit weird for me because I've never been interview before, and this was proper, I even had a photo shoot and everything, which i found a bit uncomfortable because I don't like to be centre of attention
like that.

I thought I'd find it more comfortable if they just snapped me while i was doing some life drawing around London, but that kinda back fired because the photographer was very professional and had someone separately doing the flash work, this made me stick out like a sore thumb and groups of tourist stopped to look because they thought I was some kinda celeb or something uuuurggggyyyyuuuck, very embracing. so as a result all the other interviewees, (which include my brother) look like mega cool sexy models and i look like some kinda of twat nob head hahahaha...oh dear

No Blink

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on the last post, especially the crits. I agreed with Wes that i should put a blink in, but i constructed the eye in such a bad way that adding in something as simple as a blink was proving to be time consuming, and i'd have to start re animation bits. so I'm gonna just leave it as it for the time being and working on more animation for my reel. i need to get it finished and i don't wanna dwel on anything for to long.

I'm a fan of Takashi Murakami and I've always thought that his design style is so suitable for animation. so i desided I'd animate a character in his style. but I've actually found out that he's recently been making animation, mainly in 3d, it looks really really cool. here's a link to a couple.

anyways I've design my own character in his style, which was well fun. i wanna show on my reel that can work in a range of style and do a bit of composting.

so here's Poly Tri-topus. I'm animating her spotting a fish and running after it.

Well i finally got around to finishing it!

I learnt heaps from making this. I really got to know flash a lot better, and got some good practise in after effects.

I'm working on a couple of other bits animation for my real, so watch out for them.

plus I've decided that I'm always going to be working on something in my spare time. i think it's good to have something there to keep chipping away at with out any pressure. OK, the downside is that it will probably take a long to make, as there is no schedule. but the upside is you'll never have that disappointed feeling of a boghed job because you had to rush to meet a deadline.

I've got two little short promo shorts I'm thinking about doing, one for my brother Instantbarber.

Also my friend wrote a beautiful story that I thought would make a great short film. we applied for funding to make it, but got rejected so I'm planing on making it one of my projects I chip away at.

please feel free to leave me any comments, and feel totally free to critiques this piece as it will give me stuff to think about for future projects.

Here's a still from what will probably be the final look for the short. I've done all the animation but I've still gotta do a simple background and take care of the sound, so I think it will be done by early next week, hopefully sooner.

It's not quite how i envisioned it in my head, but when is it ever. I wanted it to look more like pastel on paper.

if you wanna give me any comments or tips on the look, please feel free to. I'd love to get your opinion on how you think it looks.

I been working on that frog, kid short i posted the animatic for a while back. I'm basically done now, just gotta animate one more thing. but I'm gonna experiment with how it's composited, the idea is to make it look like it was drawn in pastel, so I'm not gonna post the whole film until I've got a result I'm happy with. i don't think it will take me more than a week or so.

but just a taster here's a run cycle i just did.

So this was meant to be entered for the coldplay lost? Video contest. the competition ran for a month but me and lyd made this in the final week of the contest, it was always going to be a challenge to get it in on time but if it wasn’t for my flash file bugging while outputting we would have made it. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get it submitted in time, so I left it for while before trying to sort it out. Fortunately I found a way around my exporting problem.

There’s soooooooooo much I would change about it, I won't go into detail, but there's a lot :), however i'm not willing to go back in and try and fix them, I need to be getting on with loads of other things and this was only meant to be a quick, see what we could do in one week kinda project, so...it is what it is. But what I will say is I learnt an incredible amount from making it, so I'm very pleased about that.

I attempted to make a video for the coldplay lost competition, the deadline was the first the of December. It came close to the wire and I completed the animation, but I miss the deadline because I had trouble with outputting files from flash. Oh how I loath computers....

I was talking to a new pal of mine Dele, who I've met while working at Partizan, and he said while looking at the sketches on my blog, that he liked the way i had laid them out because it looked sequential, like a comic. It made me think back to a conversation i had With Kristian Antonelli, Kristian was talking about making a sequential strip out of his daily sketches.

So thought I'd give it a whirl. I've added some text to glue the drawings together.

i thought I'd better post something quickly so that i can make my one a week post.. HEER
RR HRM...

This is my first every bits of animation done about 3 or so years ago, and is also the first and last time i made stop motion animation.

I made it with no story in mind, just wanted to play about and see what i could create. I had and lot of fun making the set and building the toys, which bar the big one, are from kinder eggs. what can i say, i love chocolate!

I'm halfway through the animation on my little short, but it's been put on hold for a couple of weeks because I'm helping out on a music video for Partizan's animation department. it's going well, and I'm learning loads and meeting really great people.

I'm gonna try and work all weekend on the short. I've still not got any ideas for a name for it yet, any ideas?

Subconscious Chick

I've started drawing this Character which I've named Chick Chickson, and i realised that he's the mesh of about five characters i like. i had no intention of ripping them off, it was completely a subconscious move. I almost didn't post it because i thought people might of thought i was copying them. but i think it's pretty interesting how our minds work, so i decided to share.

Animatic Critique Please?

Hey ya

i just got back from Oslo in Norway and i had a great time. i tried the night before i left to post this animatic but the file i uploaded in vimeo was skipping and stuff when it played. I didn't have time to fix it, which sucked because i don't wanna start animating it until i get a bit of a critique on it. I was hoping when i got back i'd have some good feedback, make some changes based on the feedback and start to work on it. but as it hasn't worked out that way...bummer.

anyways, feel totally free to give any thoughts you have on the timing, the staging, or poses. I'm totally open to any suggestion you'd like to make.

i tried to make the animatic quite detailed in terms of movemet, i think it will make it easier when it come to animating it in flash.

plus I'll post up some of the drawings i did in Oslo, there won't be very many because i didn't do a hell of a lot because most days i was trying to deal with a hang over.

trying to do some nice flash stuff for my showreel (coz i suck at flash, to many ways to do things). i really like those Robinson ad's, they're really nice. i think it's flash? but if it is, i haven't got a clue how the make it look like pastels? if anyone could shed some light, shine it my way.

anyways the ad made me wanna do a my designs in a pastel style.

Here's a little drawing i did so i could make a flash version.

and here's the flash version, i tried to give it a pastel kinda look by drawing the lines in illustrator first, but i think that's gonna be tricky keep that up when i'm animating...sigh...if any ones got any good ideas i'm all ears, or as i'd be reading it, i'm all eyes.

i don't like this version as much, i think something has very much got lost in translation...

any feedback would be great.
